Jomox Studies

Jascha Narveson A jaw-dropping display of live drum-machine playing! The first track has the aggression of Twitch-era Ministry but the rhythms of a jazz drum solo. The next few are sneakier sounding, with each track leaning into a particular sound + fx combo, sometimes sounding like a quiet Berlin warehouse party held by ants, sometimes sounding like hi-hats trading whispered secrets. The giant mix at the end is glorious. Favorite track: Extended Study (Mix).

about

Improvisations and variations on the Jomox XBase 09 analog drum machine, arranged in Ableton Live. Extended Study features the XBase through an Electro-Harmonix Memory Man Deluxe analog delay and a Darkglass Electronics Microtubes B3K overdrive pedal, plus one synth pad sample from a Roland MC-303.

Tracks 1-7 were created with accompanying video studies for the MICA Sound Art Vigil, Baltimore, and BİLGİ 12th New Music Festival, Istanbul, 2021; track 8 for a radio performance on Studio 96 on WERA/Arlington, 2019.

With gratitude for the drum machine improvisations of Jeff Mills and Ikue Mori and the hi hat solos of Max Roach.
